Trump’s DOJ national security chief just quit — third top exit this week

John Eisenberg, the assistant attorney general who ran the Justice Department’s National Security Division, has resigned — another high-level departure from Donald Trump’s DOJ just days after Democrats’ midterm sweep.

Attorney General Todd Blanche confirmed the resignation Friday. Eisenberg oversaw terrorism, espionage, and leak investigations, and his division was involved in the classified-documents prosecution of former Trump national security adviser John Bolton earlier this year.

His exit lands the same day South Florida U.S. Attorney Jason Reding Quiñones stepped down, and just one day after Civil Rights Division chief Harmeet Dhillon announced she was leaving. That makes three senior DOJ officials gone in roughly 48 hours.

Blanche said this was Eisenberg’s “second tour of duty serving President Trump as a national security official and advisor.” Reporting from Politico, The Washington Post, Reuters, and Fox News all confirmed the shake-up Friday morning.

Democrats taking control of Congress next year have already signaled aggressive oversight of the Justice Department — including how Trump’s DOJ handled politically charged probes. Progressive watchdogs see the resignations as a sign that officials who steered those efforts may be bracing for subpoenas.

What happens next to the national security portfolio — and to the unfinished investigations those officials left behind — is still unclear. For now, the message from Main Justice is unmistakable: the post-election exodus has begun.
