DOJ National Security Chief John Eisenberg Resigns, AG Blanche Confirms

WASHINGTON — John Eisenberg, the assistant attorney general who led the Justice Department’s National Security Division, has resigned, Attorney General Todd Blanche said Friday.

Eisenberg’s exit comes one day after Civil Rights Division head Harmeet Dhillon stepped down and the same day Attorney General Blanche announced the resignation of Jason Reding Quiñones, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Florida.

As head of the National Security Division, Eisenberg oversaw prosecutions involving terrorism, espionage, and leak investigations. His division was also involved in the prosecution of former national security adviser John Bolton over allegations that he illegally retained classified information from his first Trump White House tenure.

Eisenberg was confirmed by the Senate and sworn in on June 5, 2025. Before returning to the Justice Department, he served as a deputy counsel to the president and a legal adviser to the National Security Council during President Donald Trump’s first term.

The back-to-back departures follow Democrats’ sweeping midterm gains this week and leave several high-profile national security and civil rights portfolios in transition inside the department.
