“Buckle Up”: Hillary Clinton Says a Democratic Congress Would Investigate Trump, His Family and His Supporters

Six days before the November 3 midterms, Hillary Clinton laid out what she expects a Democratic Congress to do with its power, and her list didn’t stop at President Trump.

On the latest episode of High Stakes, the limited podcast series she co-hosts with journalist Kara Swisher, Clinton said Trump is soon going to face a Democratic Congress that will try to rein him in and hold him accountable, and that it will investigate him, his administration, his family, and his supporters and allies.

What she said

The comments came when Swisher asked what happens if Trump and Republicans lose big in the midterms. Clinton answered, as quoted by Townhall:

“And he’s soon going to have a Democratic Congress trying to rein him in, hold him accountable, investigate him, his administration, his family, his, you know, supporters and allies. He literally has held Republicans hostage for a decade and that only works for so long. One day, the hostages look around and say there are more of us than there is of him.”

She then added: “We need to take him on, and I think we can see that happen. So buckle up. The election is just the beginning.”

During the same discussion Clinton also called Trump “a lame duck.”

Who are the “supporters”?

Clinton did not say which supporters she meant, what they would be investigated for, or which congressional committees would do the investigating. That vagueness is exactly what set off conservatives online. Promising oversight of a sitting administration is standard opposition-party talk. Adding a president’s family and his “supporters and allies” to the list is something else, and critics were quick to point out that tens of millions of Americans voted for Trump.

A clip of the remarks spread quickly on X, where conservative accounts described it as a promise of reprisals against anyone connected to the president. Townhall called it the latest Democratic call for “massive lawfare” against the administration, the Trump family and even the president’s supporters.

Part of a bigger pattern

Clinton isn’t the first Democrat to preview a wave of investigations. House Democrats have talked for months about what they would probe if they win back the majority, and the list of potential targets has included senior White House officials as well as the president’s family.

Defenders of Clinton say she was describing ordinary congressional oversight. Critics say the word “supporters” gives the game away, and that voters deserve to know exactly who Democrats plan to put under the microscope before they hand over subpoena power.

Why it matters now

Early voting is underway across the country ahead of Election Day on Tuesday, November 3. Control of both the House and the Senate is on the line, and with it, the power to launch the kind of investigations Clinton is promising.

Her message to listeners was clear: if Democrats win, the investigations are coming. Whether voters see that as accountability or as a threat may say a lot about how next Tuesday turns out.
