World’s Most Northern Electric Ferry Now Sailing in Frigid -13°F Temps (-25°C)

An all-electric passenger and car ferry has made waves in northern Norway, proving that extreme cold temperatures can’t hinder its performance, even when entirely battery-powered.

The M/F Vargsund, which connects the islands of Kvaløya and Seiland in Finnmark county, is leading the charge in a new era of sustainable transportation. On January 1st, it embarked on its inaugural journey from the quay at Klokkarøy, carrying its first passengers as temperatures plunged to a brisk -13°F (-25°C).

While other car ferries operate in this northern region, M/F Vargsund stands out as the only one powered entirely by electricity. This impressive feat is not just about introducing new vessels; it’s a significant step towards a greener future, showcasing that eco-friendly technology can thrive even in challenging conditions. Operator Torghatten expressed their commitment to innovation, stating that the ferry’s successful operation over the past two weeks marks a hopeful milestone for the future.

Measuring 50 meters from bow to stern, the ferry can accommodate 28 cars and 100 passengers. As Norway’s largest ferry operator, Torghatten aims to reduce its carbon footprint while inspiring the broader industry to embrace ambitious sustainability goals.

In fact, the company’s most frequently used ferry, which connects Bognes and Lødingen in northern Norway, is also fully electric. This shift towards electric vehicles is reflected in broader trends, with 95.9% of all new car registrations in Norway in 2025 being electric, as the nation moves closer to impending regulations on internal combustion engines.

Share the excitement of this remarkable debut and the promise it holds for the future of transportation along Norway’s stunning northern coastline!
