A woman from Manchester, Tennessee, recently captured hearts when her DoorDash order turned into a remarkable act of kindness. Brittany Smith was taken aback after seeing an elderly man on her doorbell camera while waiting for her delivery.
Moved by his struggle, Brittany decided to take action and launched a GoFundMe campaign, which ultimately raised an astonishing $940,000 to help the man, known as Richard, retire comfortably.
It was an ordinary weekday when Brittany heard her doorbell ring. She quickly opened the app on her phone to see Richard, dressed in a red flannel shirt and khakis, making his way up to her porch. Although he was delivering her order, it was evident that he was moving slowly and needed some assistance from the handrail.
“My daughter’s dad is a quadriplegic, so he often has things sent to the house because he can’t physically go get them,” Brittany explained, sharing why Richard was delivering her Starbucks that day. She felt a deep sense of empathy watching him struggle to navigate the steps.
Wanting to show her appreciation, Brittany called her daughter’s father to arrange a larger tip, but unfortunately, he informed her that the option to do so through the DoorDash app had already passed. Undeterred, she shared the video of Richard on TikTok and other social media platforms, hoping someone in the community might recognize him.
Her efforts paid off when a Facebook user identified Richard and connected him with Brittany. She drove to his home to deliver a $200 tip, which was already a heartwarming gesture, but the story didn’t end there.
When she arrived, Richard shared that he and his wife had faced tough times after she lost her job, leading them to deplete their savings while covering essential expenses and expensive medications. Desperate to make ends meet, Richard took up the DoorDash gig.

“I had no idea that I was going to gain that much traction,” Brittany shared, expressing her surprise at the overwhelming support. Meanwhile, Richard revealed he hadn’t slept in two days, captivated by the unfolding kindness that was changing his life.
