In the picturesque landscapes of England’s South Downs National Park, a remarkable initiative has taken root, creating a breathtaking series of traditional hedgerows that stretch for an impressive 15 miles. This incredible project, known as the Hampshire Hedge, connects the South Downs National Park to the New Forest National Park, fostering a vital link for wildlife across this beautiful region.
Over the past three years, dedicated volunteers and skilled experts have joined forces to establish this unbroken line of hedgerows, which serves as a crucial habitat corridor for a diverse array of wildlife. These hedgerows are more than mere barriers; they provide a sanctuary for around 2,000 species each year, including mice, hedgehogs, insects, and birds, allowing them to traverse the landscape like a natural highway.
The Hampshire Hedge initiative was organized by the Campaign to Protect Rural England’s (CPRE) “Hedgerow Heroes” program, receiving generous support from various conservation nonprofits and the UK’s National Lottery Heritage Fund. Alison Johnston, a councilwoman focused on countryside affairs at Test Valley Borough Council, emphasizes the significance of hedgerows, stating that they are essential to the landscape of Test Valley, aiding wildlife, combating climate change, and ensuring the countryside remains vibrant.
With the project nearing completion, the community recently gathered at the Broadlands estate to celebrate the third year of hedge laying during a festive event dubbed “Hedgefest.” This joyful occasion also marked CPRE’s 100th anniversary, showcasing the power of collective efforts in making a positive impact on the environment.
Vanessa Rowlands, Chair of the South Downs National Park Authority, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, “The CPRE’s initiative to link the New Forest and South Downs through these hedgerows is such an inspiring idea. We’ve always wanted to create a closer connection with the New Forest, both physically and environmentally for wildlife. We’re incredibly excited about it!”
