Visionary Birding Route Now Links 5 African Nations Along Ancient River Migratory Map

The unveiling of a remarkable new transboundary birding route has positioned southern Africa as a premier destination for international birdwatching enthusiasts.

This exciting route, known as the Great Kavango Zambezi Birding Route, stretches across five nations: Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. It boasts a stunning array of approximately 650 endemic and migratory bird species, all while traversing the largest conservation area in the world, which is comparable in size to both Germany and France combined.

The birding route navigates through 36 protected areas, featuring 12 distinct birding zones, each showcasing a variety of ecosystems from arid deserts to lush forests and vibrant wetlands.

Birdwatchers will have the unique opportunity to follow ancient migratory paths along five majestic rivers: the Zambezi, Chobe, Kwando, Kavango, and Kafue, as they meander through the breathtaking landscapes of southern Africa.

Dr. Nyambe Nyambe, Executive Director of the Kavango-Zambezi Secretariat, highlighted the significance of this collective effort, stating, “No single country could offer what these five nations can achieve together. This route is a living example of cross-border cooperation, merging diverse habitats and expertise into one cohesive offering that places southern Africa firmly on the global birding map.”

A recent international press expedition showcased the region’s birding potential, documenting an impressive 215 bird species, including 43 that were observed for the very first time by seasoned birders. This remarkable achievement underscores the route’s appeal to serious avitourists.

Numerous partners have joined this inspiring initiative, from local chapters of BirdLife International, which have facilitated training for birding guides, to safari lodges and camps experienced in guiding visitors through the region’s stunning scenery. Conservation organizations actively work within these areas to safeguard both birds and mammals from threats like poaching.

To promote and operate experiences under the KAZA Birding Route brand, a total of 100 Birding Route Ambassadors have already registered, ensuring that visitors receive top-notch guidance and support.
