Vacation Film Forgotten in 70-yo Vintage Camera Was Developed for the First Time: Do You Know These Skiers?

From the picturesque British countryside of Salisbury comes a delightful tale about a forgotten roll of film discovered in a vintage camera at a thrift shop.

Ian Scott, from the Salisbury Photo Center, took on the task of developing the film along with the new owner of the charming antique camera. To their surprise, they uncovered vivid memories from a skiing adventure in St. Moritz, Switzerland.

However, the camera had been left at Alabaré Wilton Emporium ages ago, and the identities of the people captured in these nostalgic images remain a mystery. In an effort to uncover the stories behind the faces, Scott has initiated a national awareness campaign, hoping someone might recognize a familiar face.

“No leads on the photos yet,” Scott shared with our local news source on February 19th. “It has been featured on TV, in the Sunday Express, and my Instagram post received 8,000 views in just 24 hours, but unfortunately, we haven’t made any connections yet.”

A few intriguing clues are present in the photographs. The camera is a Zeiss Ikon Baby Ikonta, a compact model from the interwar period designed for pocket convenience. The film used, Verichrome Pan 127, made its debut in Britain in 1956.

Additionally, the skiers are seen wearing numbered vests branded with Cow & Gate, which was known for sponsoring a ski trophy during the 1950s. One photo even features a woman ice skating in front of the iconic Badrutt’s Palace Hotel, confirming their location at the stunning St. Moritz ski resort.

“There appears to be a fascinating story behind these photographs, and it would be wonderful if someone could recognize a face among them,” Scott expressed to the Salisbury & Avon Gazette. “At the very least, it has been a privilege to play a small part in preserving these moments from the past.”

It’s quite remarkable to see how lightly some of the skiers are dressed, showcasing the resilience of wool clothing!

Let’s spread the word about these intriguing mystery photographs and see if we can help uncover the stories from years gone by!
