An extraordinarily rare Pokémon card that originally cost just $2 in 1999 has recently fetched an astounding $40,000 at auction.
The card in question is the 1st edition Shadowless Base Set Charizard, often referred to as the “holy grail” among collectors and fans, as noted by Hansons Auctioneers.
This pristine card was featured in the largest Pokémon card auction ever held in the UK, marking a celebration of the franchise’s 30th anniversary. Since its inception, Pokémon has captivated the hearts of both children and adults alike around the globe.
Back in 1999, a pack of 11 Pokémon cards could be purchased at Woolworths for just $1.50 to $2. “Finding a Charizard was the rarest holographic card in the Base Set, making it feel like winning a mini lottery when you pulled one from a pack,” explained Pokémon specialist David Wilson-Turner from Hansons. He also mentioned that 30 years later, Pokémon is experiencing a remarkable revival.

With only 4,000 to 10,000 of these cards produced, most have seen heavy use and wear, making a mint-condition version—like this one, which boasts a grading of 9 out of 10—extremely rare.
The demand for rare and sealed Pokémon products continues to soar, with some cards and booster sets being resold at incredible prices. Auctioneer Charles Hanson, known from TV’s Bargain Hunt, commented, “The Pokémon market has seen rapid growth in recent years. It’s stronger than ever and is set to keep expanding.”
He further noted that young, affluent collectors in their 20s and 30s, who grew up with Pokémon, are now investing in rare cards, contributing to a surge in prices that began a few years ago.
So, it might be time to rummage through your old toy boxes and attic collections—you might just uncover a hidden treasure worth thousands!
