Total Lunar Eclipse Tuesday Morning Will Unveil Blood Moon for N. America, Australia and East Asia

The full Moon in March is set to dazzle skywatchers with an enchanting orange-red hue during a total Lunar eclipse, and North America is perfectly situated for this celestial spectacle!

Often referred to as a Blood Moon in popular media, this captivating event might be more aptly named the coral or jasper moon, as its appearance resembles those colors more than anything reminiscent of blood.

Mark your calendars for the early morning of Tuesday, March 3rd, when the eclipse will reach its peak. Totality will occur between 6:04 and 7:02 a.m. Eastern Time (3:04 to 4:02 a.m. Pacific Time), providing an extraordinary viewing opportunity.

The magical transformation of the Moon into an orange-red orb is a result of sunlight filtering through Earth’s atmosphere. Sunlight encompasses a full spectrum of colors, each with unique properties. During the day, blue light scatters easily, lending the sky its vibrant hue. However, as the Earth positions itself between the Sun and the Moon, red light—traveling at a more direct angle—manages to penetrate the atmosphere and casts its warm glow upon the Moon.

Understanding the distinction between a ‘total’ and ‘partial’ Lunar eclipse is key. During a total eclipse, the Moon glides into the deepest part of Earth’s shadow, known as the umbra, leading to a breathtaking moment of totality. This occurs when the Sun, Earth, and Moon align perfectly, with the Sun’s light casting a shadow over the Moon.

For about 32 minutes before and after totality, the Moon will still be in Earth’s shadow but not completely centered, resulting in a beautiful orange-red appearance, although it may lack the deepest red tones of totality. This scenario is referred to as a partial Lunar eclipse.

This remarkable eclipse will offer the best views from western North America, Central America, and the western regions of South America. Additionally, stargazers in Australia, New Zealand, and eastern Asia will also have the chance to witness this dazzling event.

So, gather your friends and step outside to experience this incredible moment in nature together!
