Thousands of Starlings Rise in Murmuration Under Brilliant ‘Worm’ Moon

In an awe-inspiring display of nature, a magnificent murmuration of starlings took to the skies beneath the enchanting glow of March’s full moon, known as the Worm Moon. Stunning photographs captured the breathtaking moment when thousands of starlings flew in perfect harmony across the evening skyline.

The Worm Moon signifies the arrival of spring, heralding the time when beetles and other creatures start to emerge from their winter slumber. This full moon is celebrated by various cultures, with some referring to it as the Sugar Moon. The Ojibwe people named it as such, indicating the period when tapping maple trees would yield sweet sap, signaling the end of winter’s chill.

UK photographer Tony Nellis had the privilege of witnessing this spectacular event as he captured the starlings in flight over South Shields, Tyne and Wear, last Monday night. He shared his excitement, stating, “I couldn’t help but think of the phrase ‘the early bird gets the worm’ while observing the murmuration against the backdrop of the Worm Moon. I took numerous pictures, and then suddenly, they swooped down.”

He went on to describe the astonishing scene, noting, “There were so many birds that they nearly obscured the moon, creating silhouettes of thousands of starlings against its luminous surface. It was truly an incredible sight.”

Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, the full moon graced American skies on Tuesday morning, coinciding with a lunar eclipse, affectionately known as a “blood moon,” which was not visible in the UK.

Share this delightful celebration of nature’s beauty with your friends and let them bask in the wonder of this celestial event!
