Teen Lifesaver Awarded One of Scouting’s Highest Honors After Harrowing Whitewater Rescue

A remarkable teenage hero from Texas has received a prestigious commendation that has been awarded fewer than 300 times in the history of the Boy Scouts, after performing a courageous rescue of his scout leader from drowning in turbulent rapids.

Devon Champenoy, a Houston native, was part of a group of young scouts enjoying a thrilling rafting experience on class 3 rapids at a summer camp nestled in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia.

During the adventure, scout leader David Lemley, who was positioned at the back of the raft, experienced a sudden mishap at a challenging stretch of the river and fell into the churning waters. After initially regaining his footing and laughing about the fun of the day, Lemley’s next fall proved to be far more serious.

As he plunged into the river again, this time his foot became trapped under the raft’s seat, leaving his head and torso submerged. In a precarious position, he could only gasp for air when the water level permitted, while his helmet provided essential protection as he collided with rocks beneath the raging surface.

Meanwhile, the quick-thinking 13-year-old Champenoy sprang into action. He navigated across the raft and managed to free Lemley’s foot, with the assistance of nearby kayakers who came to help complete the rescue.

Reflecting on the incident, Lemley expressed his gratitude, stating, “I have no doubt that if Devon hadn’t released my foot, I was going to die.” Champenoy, now fully aware of the gravity of the situation, shared, “It took a while for me to take in the fact that this happened and I saved a life,” admitting his actions were driven by instinct.

Although Lemley suffered a broken foot during the ordeal, Champenoy stepped up to guide the raft through the remaining 20 minutes of rapids, ensuring everyone remained calm and focused until they reached safety.

In recognition of his extraordinary bravery, Devon was nominated by his Scout Leader for the Honor Medal with Crossed Palms, which acknowledges unusual heroism in saving a life. This honor is a rare achievement, having been bestowed fewer than 300 times in over a century of the Boy Scouts of America.

Additionally, Devon received special recognition from Texas Governor Greg Abbott for his heroic act. Now at 15 years old, Champenoy is on the path to becoming an Eagle Scout, and many believe that this young hero will breeze through the process.

Let’s celebrate this inspiring young man’s quick thinking and bravery in saving his scout leader’s life!
