Snowmobilers Dig Exhausted Young Moose Out of the snow in New Hampshire Woods

A group of snowmobilers in New Hampshire recently demonstrated incredible kindness by lending a helping hoof to a young moose in distress.

After enjoying a thrilling morning navigating through snow drifts as high as 4 to 5 feet, Mike Dion and his friends were on their way home for lunch when they encountered an unexpected surprise: a moose trapped in the snow, with only its snout and the tuft of its mane visible above the powdery white blanket.

Recognizing the moose was in serious trouble, Dion shared that their first instinct was to call Fish and Game for assistance, but they quickly realized there was no cell service. “If we don’t do something,” he thought, “the moose probably isn’t going to survive.”

Approaching the animal with care, they discovered it was fatigued but calm, having likely been trying to escape its snowy prison without success. Unsure if the moose’s hooves were on solid ground, they worked diligently, spending around 20 minutes on their hands and knees to dig it out.

“Eventually, we got her up and got her going, and she seemed to be all in good health,” Dion recounted. “I think she was happy. She wasn’t aggressive or too nasty with us, which was a relief.”

After freeing the moose, the snowmobilers stayed for about 10 minutes to ensure she was stable before heading home. A representative from the Fish and Game Department advised that moose can be dangerous when cornered or frightened. In such situations, she recommended calling the department for help.

This heartwarming rescue echoes a similar event reported by GNN in 2024, where snowmobilers in Anchorage worked for hours to free a moose that had fallen and become trapped in a frozen creek.

Let’s celebrate this act of kindness and share the uplifting story of the snowmobilers who came to the rescue of a moose in need!
