Schoolboy With ‘Can-Do’ Attitude Has Recycled a Million Cans and Donated the Proceeds to Charity

A remarkable 13-year-old boy has successfully raised thousands of dollars for charity by recycling over a million aluminum cans. Meet Ryan Hulance, who hails from Solihull in England’s West Midlands. His innovative idea not only aims to help food banks but also underscores his commitment to environmental stewardship.

In 2023, Ryan began reaching out to local businesses, inquiring if they could donate any cans for him to sell. His efforts quickly gained momentum, and he started collecting a few hundred cans each week. With the support of his parents, they found a clever way to manage the collection process. They would crush the cans by driving over them in their car, maximizing storage space before Ryan packaged them up for recycling.

Just like in the United States, scrap metal firms in the UK pay between 10 and 50 cents per pound of aluminum. Last year alone, Ryan collected an impressive eight tons of cans, which translated into approximately $7,300 in donations for a women’s charity. Ryan shared, “Sometimes I think I’d rather be playing video games with my friends, because I’m 13 years old. But when I reflect on it more deeply, I truly enjoy what I do because I’m helping people and families in need.”

Over the past three years, Ryan has recycled an estimated 1.5 million cans, raising around $20,000, all of which he has generously donated to charity. His efforts have garnered so much attention that his family was gifted an industrial crushing machine, enabling them to bundle the cans into large metal bales for easier transportation and storage.

Despite being a busy student, Ryan dedicates about 20 hours each week to his charitable recycling efforts, collecting cans after school and on weekends. His mom, Karima, expressed immense pride in his accomplishments, stating, “We want to help him expand even further. The cans come from around 200 regular suppliers, but we aim to broaden that to many thousands. Recently, we’ve been recycling one ton per month, but we know we can achieve so much more.”

Let’s celebrate this inspiring young man and his unwavering dedication to making a difference in his community!
