Newborn Giraffe With Distinctive Hair-do is Charming Visitors to Ohio Zoo–And They Gave Him the Perfect Name

A delightful four-week-old giraffe is capturing hearts and amusing visitors at the Toledo Zoo & Aquarium in Ohio, all thanks to his unique tuft of hair.

The young calf, weighing in at 130 pounds, was born on January 17, and after a public naming contest, he has been affectionately dubbed Eugene—a name that perfectly complements his charming demeanor.

According to the zoo staff, Eugene’s distinctive tuft of hair has made him a hit among fans. Jennifer Brassil from the zoo remarked, “He’s got his little tuft of hair on top of his head. The public is just loving him.”

Currently, visitors can admire Eugene and his adorable hairstyle indoors, but as spring approaches and the temperatures rise, he is set to make his outdoor debut. “Typically, our giraffes don’t go out into the Africa exhibit until the weather reaches somewhere around 50 degrees,” noted the staff.

Eugene comes from a loving family, with parents Lily and Rocket, making this the first calf for Lily. Since joining the herd of seven other giraffes, Eugene has been integrating well, with both him and the rest of the herd showing a keen interest in each other. “He’s growing into his own personality, too,” shared Brassil.

With his charming tuft and quirky name, Eugene has quickly become a social media darling. Brassil added, “It really does seem to fit his personality,” as she observes the newborn embracing his name more each day.
