Monks Arrival After 15 Weeks of Walking Fills DC Streets With Peace and Compassion

A day filled with peace and compassion unfolded in Washington, D.C., as a group of Buddhist monks made their remarkable arrival barefoot on the steps of the National Cathedral, with snow still blanketing the ground. Locals described the atmosphere as uniquely uplifting and unforgettable.

“This is a moment I will cherish forever,” expressed Venerable Bhikkhu Pannakara, the leader of the monks. “I hope you will remember it too.”

For months, the nation has been inspired by the journey of 19 senior monks, known as Bhikkhus, who embarked from the Hương Đạo Vipassana Bhavana Center in Fort Worth, Texas. Their trek of 2,300 miles to the nation’s capital was dedicated to the noble cause of peace.

These 19 dedicated men hail from monasteries within the Theravada Buddhist tradition, participating in a time-honored practice of promoting peace through long-distance walking. The term “Vipassana” signifies a meditative breathing technique taught by the Buddha, which Ven. Pannakara shared during Dharma talks throughout their 15-week journey.

In a country often perceived as predominantly Christian, the sight of the saffron-clad monks walking silently with bare feet along the streets captivated the hearts of many, drawing millions of followers to the Walk for Peace social media platforms.

As they gracefully made their way down Wisconsin Avenue, thousands cheered in support, while many others understood the significance of remaining silent, occasionally expressing “Sadhu!”—a Pali phrase meaning “wisely done.”

The first official stop in D.C. was American University’s Bender Arena, where 3,500 attendees watched in reverent silence as the monks entered to speak. Their journey reached its peak in front of the National Cathedral, where Washington Episcopal Bishop Mariann Budde hosted an interfaith gathering to warmly welcome them.

At this momentous gathering, Ven. Pannakara, known for his gentle demeanor, invited the crowd to join him in a moment of quiet reflection and breathing as the crisp air flowed through the bare branches of trees, accompanied by the soothing sound of bells ringing in the background. He encouraged everyone to recite the mantra: “Today will be my peaceful day.”

After resting at a local fire department, which had graciously offered them shelter since the beginning of their journey, the monks proceeded past Capitol Hill on Wednesday, leading up to their final public act—an inspiring gathering on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

One resident, Nicole Krakora, shared her thoughts on Facebook, saying, “In the 40 years I have lived in Washington, I have NEVER experienced such beautiful, respectful, and loving public events. Such beautiful silence.” Many observers even noted the resonances with Martin Luther King Jr.’s iconic speech delivered on the same steps.

This incredible journey, steeped in tranquility and compassion, has left a lasting impression on the hearts of all who witnessed it. Share this uplifting story with your friends!
