Happy 70th Birthday to Steve Harris, the talented bassist, songwriter, and lyricist who has played a pivotal role in shaping Iron Maiden, the legendary heavy metal band that has captivated audiences around the globe. Harris is not only a remarkable musician but also takes on various other responsibilities within the band, including producing their albums, directing and editing live videos, and even contributing on keyboards and synthesizers. He is often celebrated as the greatest heavy metal bassist, known more for his stylistic innovations than sheer technical prowess.
Hailing from Leytonstone in East London, Harris began his career as an architectural draftsman before venturing into music. He founded Iron Maiden in 1975, drawing inspiration from his love of history and literature, which has greatly influenced his songwriting, much like fellow progressive rock legends Neil Peart and Ian Anderson.
As the primary songwriter for many of Iron Maiden’s iconic hits, Harris holds #1 or sole writing credits for classics such as “Run to the Hills,” “The Trooper,” “Hallowed Be Thy Name,” and “Aces High.”
Beyond his musical achievements, Harris is a devoted father to six children, two of whom have followed in his footsteps as professional musicians. He also takes pride in managing a community soccer team in East London called the “Maidonians” and is frequently spotted at matches supporting his childhood team, West Ham United.
