What began as a simple chair volleyball game at a senior living community in Belton, Texas, has blossomed into a heartwarming intergenerational friendship.
The spirited seniors, affectionately known as “The Hit Squad,” regularly organize friendly chair volleyball matches with members of the Lake Belton High School volleyball team. These games have become a source of joy for both groups, infusing the community with energy, laughter, and friendly competition.
“We just laugh and laugh when we practice,” shared Hit Squad member Charlotte Wheeler, highlighting the fun atmosphere of the matches.
Beyond the games, the friendships have grown in wonderful ways. Recently, the residents attended one of the high school girls’ games, where they cheered enthusiastically from the stands and surprised eight senior athletes with personalized goodie bags during the school’s ‘Senior Night’ celebration.
In response, the students have embraced this connection with open arms, frequently visiting and fostering friendships that have had a positive impact on both families and staff involved.
High schooler Thia Allsion expressed her excitement, saying, “I’m ready to get some wisdom and skills from those who know more than I do.” This eagerness to connect has led to a growing number of students wanting to engage with the senior community.
As news of the matches spread across campus, the undefeated Lady Broncos basketball team also expressed interest in scheduling their own chair volleyball game with the residents, further enriching the interactions.
