A remarkable act of bravery unfolded recently when a Good Samaritan, Casey Curtis, found himself in the right place at the right time to help a mother and her three children after their car flipped into a canal. Reflecting on the incident, Curtis expressed his gratitude for being nearby when disaster struck.
What began as a peaceful Sunday drive quickly transformed into a chaotic scene. Curtis was taken aback when he noticed in his rearview mirror that a car following him suddenly accelerated, veering off the road and disappearing into the bushes. Without hesitation, he pulled over and called 911 while following the tire tracks to find the source of the trouble.
To his astonishment, he discovered a Jeep overturned and partially submerged in water, just a few meters from the roadside. “I reached the car and opened the door, only to find three children staring at me, looking helpless,” Curtis recounted during a local news interview.
The children, aged 8, 2, and just 4 months, were in distress, crying for their mother, whose head was unfortunately submerged beneath the water. Acting swiftly, Curtis rescued the children, bringing them safely to the bank before wading into the canal himself to save their mother.
“I lifted the mom’s head out of the water, and she wasn’t breathing,” Curtis recalled. “I gave her a breath, and she started breathing again.” His quick thinking played a vital role in the rescue.
Emergency responders soon arrived at the scene on Allapattah Road in Martin County and transported the family to the hospital. Thankfully, the three children were unharmed, while their mother, Shyenique Wilkins, remained hospitalized and on a ventilator.
In support of the family, Wilkins’ niece has created a GoFundMe page to assist with medical expenses, which has already raised $4,100 toward a $10,000 goal.
Curtis expressed his profound relief at being able to help, noting that the road was deserted at the time, and anyone arriving later would have struggled to spot the vehicle hidden beyond the trees. His selfless actions serve as a powerful reminder of the impact one person can have in a moment of crisis.
