The Greek government has taken a heartwarming step by organizing a special evacuation flight from the United Arab Emirates, designed specifically for pets and their owners who faced challenges securing spots on commercial airlines.
In light of the recent tensions following attacks by Israel and the US on Iran, nations have activated various measures to ensure the safety of their citizens in the Persian Gulf region. The Greek authorities, however, emphasized a unique aspect of their citizens’ plight—ensuring they could flee alongside their beloved pets.
On Wednesday, a flight landed in Athens, bringing over a hundred passengers and their furry companions home. This initiative aimed to simplify the often complicated process of traveling internationally with pets, ensuring families could stay together during this tumultuous time.
“Our pets are not luggage; they are part of our families,” expressed Nikos Chrysakis, the Greek Interior Ministry’s Special Secretary for the Protection of Companion Animals.
Due to the ongoing conflict, airspace closures across the UAE, Qatar, and surrounding countries have led to the cancellation of thousands of flights over the past 20 days, leaving countless passengers stranded. For those trying to fly with their pets, the situation has been particularly challenging, as shared by one Greek cat owner.

With a vibrant expatriate community attracted by the UAE’s appealing lifestyle, favorable taxes, and pleasant weather, many Greeks sought assistance to escape the bustling cities of Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
Upon arrival of the special Aegean Air flight in Athens, an atmosphere of joy and relief filled the air. Families were reunited, with touching scenes of stressed pets joyfully jumping out of their carriers and into the arms of their delighted owners.
“It is very, very difficult to fly out of the country with your pets,” said Danai Koukoulomati, who returned home with her cat, Muay Thai. Another pet owner celebrated her safe return with her dog, Sirkati, describing the experience as “absolutely fantastic.”
Chrysakis noted that the collaboration between the Greek interior and foreign ministries was vital, as they worked tirelessly for several days to achieve this successful outcome, ensuring both animals and their humans could safely return home.
This remarkable effort highlights the importance of family, including our four-legged friends, during challenging times. Spread the word about this wonderful initiative to help stranded citizens reunite with their beloved pets!
