Cheers to Sir Elton John as he celebrates his 79th birthday today! Born in London, this extraordinary singer-songwriter began his piano journey at the tender age of three. Over his incredible five-decade career, Elton John has captivated audiences worldwide, selling over 300 million records and earning a place among the best-selling music artists globally.

With more than fifty Top 40 hits under his belt, including classics like “Rocket Man,” “Tiny Dancer,” and “Bennie and the Jets,” he has achieved remarkable success, including seven consecutive No. 1 albums in the United States. One of his most iconic songs, “Candle in the Wind 1997,” which he reimagined as a tribute to the beloved Princess Diana, has sold over 33 million copies, making it the best-selling single in both the UK and US charts.

Originally named Kenneth Dwight, he adopted the name Elton Hercules John as a nod to two members of his early band, Elton Dean and vocalist Long John Baldry. Despite facing challenges during a strict upbringing, Elton found solace in music, thanks to his parents’ passion for records. Influenced by legendary rock and roll pianists like Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard, he humorously notes, “I’m more of a Little Richard stylist than a Jerry Lee Lewis, I think.”

Elton John’s accolades are numerous, including five Grammys, five Brit Awards, two Tonys, two Oscars, a Kennedy Center Honor, France’s Legion d’Honneur, and a knighthood. In 1976, he took on the role of chairman of Watford FC, his hometown football club, guiding them through a period of remarkable achievements, including a second-place finish in the country and a spot in the FA Cup final. His connection to the club remains strong, as he maintains a significant financial interest and is often seen in the “Sir Elton John Stand” at Vicarage Road stadium.

Today, we also wish a happy 61st birthday to Sarah Jessica Parker! The talented producer, entrepreneur, and actress is best known for her iconic role as Carrie Bradshaw in the beloved HBO series “Sex and the City.” Over the course of six seasons, her performances earned her two Emmys, four Golden Globes, and three Screen Actors Guild Awards. Recently, she has ventured into fashion with her own line of SJP shoes and handbags.

Parker made her Broadway debut at just 11 years old and starred in the title role of the musical “Annie” three years later. She returned to the stage in early 2020 alongside her husband, Matthew Broderick, in “Plaza Suite.” Despite the theater closures due to COVID-19, she shared an uplifting message on Instagram: “Broadway doesn’t stay quiet for long. We will be back. The Rialto will hum. Times Square will hustle and bustle… We count the days until the marquees are once again lit.”

In addition to her work in television (“Divorce”) and films like “The First Wives Club,” “The Family Stone,” and “Failure to Launch,” she also runs her production company, Pretty Matches, along with her successful shoe and handbag line.

On this day in history, we also celebrate the launch of the world’s first passenger train service, which began selling tickets 219 years ago! The Swansea and Mumbles Railway marked a significant advancement in transportation, paving the way for future travel. What a day of celebration and reflection!
