Dutch Woman Finds 35 Rembrandt Etchings Hidden in Her Home: ‘You can only dream about it’

It’s always a delightful surprise when the masterpieces of renowned artists emerge from the most unexpected places, like attics, basements, and barn sheds.

From Amsterdam comes a heartwarming tale about a Dutch woman who, during the COVID-19 pandemic and under government restrictions, took the opportunity to explore a collection of prints and etchings passed down from her grandfather.

To her astonishment, among these items were 35 etchings created by the legendary Rembrandt van Rijn himself, some of which had been treasured by her family for over a century.

Initially, Charlotte Meyer felt hesitant to consult experts about her find, concerned that they might be forgeries and that she would waste everyone’s time. However, when a team of appraisers from the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam arrived, they delivered incredible news.

“They said, ‘Charlotte, you have no idea what you’ve got!’” Meyer recounted to a Dutch news outlet. “It’s such a beautiful story, one you can only dream about.”

Her grandfather had carefully collected these etchings between 1900 and 1920, purchasing them for just a few guilders at a time when they were considered ordinary. “Nobody was interested in etchings back then; they were nothing special,” Meyer shared.

While a few guilders may seem modest, today that amount could represent several thousand dollars. In fact, a recent auction saw a Rembrandt print sell for a staggering $4.1 million, showcasing just how valuable these treasures truly are.

This incredible discovery has transformed Meyer’s life, sparking her new passion for collecting additional Rembrandt etchings. Excitingly, her grandfather’s collection will be displayed in an upcoming museum exhibition titled “Rembrandt: From Dark to Light.”

Meyer will even lead a guided tour of this exhibit at the Stedelijk Museum Zutphen, showcasing all 35 of her grandfather’s remarkable Rembrandt etchings on March 29th.
