Doctor Adopts 4-yo Patient Who had No Family When he Arrived for Heart Surgery –And Found Homes for his 5 Siblings Too

A touching story of compassion and love unfolded when a four-year-old boy faced heart surgery alone, sparking a remarkable “butterfly effect of kindness” that would change his life forever. The caring anesthesiologist who stepped in became his new mother, providing the stable home he had never known.

True, who was born with congenital heart disease, spent his early years in foster care. When he arrived at Children’s Nebraska hospital for surgery in 2022, his social worker was unable to be there due to COVID, leaving him to face the daunting procedure by himself.

That’s when Dr. Amy Beethe entered the scene. “He was sitting there all alone,” she recalled, deeply moved by the sight of the young boy preparing for such a serious surgery without any family by his side. As True underwent a seven-hour operation, Amy couldn’t help but think about the boy’s situation.

After the surgery, Amy reached out to True’s case worker to learn more about him. She discovered that he had six siblings, five of whom were placed with their grandmother due to a challenging domestic situation. Unfortunately, none of the children were thriving, and finding a permanent home for True proved difficult, especially with his medical needs.

Then, the social worker posed a life-changing question: “Are you an option?” With an open heart, Amy considered the possibility. As a loving mother of six—three biological and three adopted—she felt that her family had room for one more.

“After I dropped True off in recovery, I called my husband and said, ‘We need to have a talk when we get home. I need you to have an open mind,’” Amy shared. When Ryan met True in the hospital, he instantly fell for the boy, and just a month after the surgery, True officially became a member of the Beethe family.

But the wonderful story didn’t end there! Realizing how much True cherished his siblings, Amy took it upon herself to find foster homes for them as well, ensuring they could maintain their connection. With love and determination, Amy’s sister adopted one of the girls, and her sister-in-law’s family took in another. A coworker welcomed two more into their home, and finally, Amy and Ryan decided to adopt True’s sister, Laney, expanding their family even more.

“The six all found homes,” Amy proudly shared, and all the adoptions were finalized in August 2023 during a heartwarming ceremony that united them all. The joy and love in this family are truly inspiring!

While it’s hard to quantify the positive impact Amy has had on the siblings’ lives, it’s clear that True has gained not just a loving family but a network of support. As he may face a heart transplant in the future, having a reliable and loving home will make all the difference in his journey ahead.
