Wishing a very happy 80th birthday to the incredible musician and singer-songwriter David Gilmour! With a remarkable career that spans over five decades, Gilmour is celebrated as the guitarist and co-lead vocalist of the iconic progressive rock band Pink Floyd. By 2012, Pink Floyd had achieved phenomenal success, with over 250 million records sold globally. His extraordinary talent has earned him the prestigious recognition of being ranked 14th among the greatest guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone magazine.

David’s journey began in his teenage years when he connected with bassist Roger Waters and guitarist Syd Barrett. In 1967, he was invited to join their band, Pink Floyd. By 1973, Gilmour took over as guitarist and co-songwriter, and together the band embraced innovative recording techniques such as multitrack recording, tape loops, and synthesizers. This creative exploration culminated in the creation of the legendary album Dark Side of the Moon, which remains one of the most successful albums ever released.

On this date, we also celebrate a fascinating milestone in the world of science. It was 361 years ago that the longest-running scientific journal, Philosophical Transactions, published its very first edition. This remarkable publication was the brainchild of Henry Oldenburg, a German theologian and natural philosopher, who envisioned a collection of scientific works akin to a philosophical commonplace book. Such books were widely kept by literate individuals of the time, serving as a diary for profound insights they encountered in their readings.

As the journal evolved, it established essential practices that define modern science writing, including peer review, registration, and archiving. The inaugural issue featured intriguing articles, including improvements in optical glasses, the first report on Jupiter’s Great Red Spot, and insights into comet behavior, among others.

Additionally, we extend warm birthday wishes to Jeff Greenwald, an adventurous traveler, award-winning author, monologist, and photographer, who celebrates his 72nd birthday today. Greenwald beautifully expresses his passion for exploration, saying, “every time I set off on a journey, I feel like God has thrown me the keys to her car.”
