A remarkable show of support unfolded for an autistic barista after his tip jar was stolen from his beloved coffee shop. Michael Coyne, who works at Red White and Brew, was left “speechless” as his community rallied around him during this challenging time.
Known for his friendly service, Michael has built connections with many of his customers, making the theft of his daily tips feel particularly personal. The coffee shop, currently navigating the financial strains of relocating to a larger space in Warwick, Rhode Island, relies on tips as its only source of additional income.
Michael, who lives with autism, ADHD, and bipolar disorder, was fostered by Sheila Coyne at the age of 10, eventually leading to his adoption. Sheila opened Red White and Brew using her retirement savings, aiming to provide her son with fulfilling employment. Despite facing hurdles during its first year due to COVID-19 restrictions, the shop has thrived and now employs individuals with mental disabilities, becoming a cherished part of the community.
“He was really interested in food service, and I thought, what better way to connect him to a community than a coffee shop?” Sheila shared, reflecting on her decision to start the business. “To me, it just made sense.”

When Michael discovered that the $20 in tips he had collected throughout the day had vanished, he was understandably upset. However, the very next day, the chief of the Warwick Police Department visited the shop for a coffee and, upon learning of the incident, promptly provided supplies for a new tip jar with a lid. He also assured the Coynes that he would investigate the theft.
In response to the theft, Sheila created a heartfelt Facebook video to raise awareness and encourage vigilance in their community. The outpouring of anger from commenters, including Warwick’s Mayor, Frank Picozzi, was palpable. “Red White and Brew is a very special place … run by wonderful people,” he wrote while sharing Sheila’s video. “I’ve come to know Michael very well and believe me, it’s not the money that’s bothering him; he’s hurt.”
The following day brought a flood of support to the coffee shop, with patrons leaving tips in the jar. One woman even contributed $100, sharing that her own son is autistic and that Michael inspires her to believe in a bright future for him as a working adult.
As the kindness continued, Michael received an astounding $900 in tips over just a few days. “That was the most special part,” Sheila reflected. “It was truly just one person after another, leading with such kindness and grace that it renewed my love for humans and humanity.”
Michael expressed his gratitude, admitting that the outpouring of support left him truly speechless. This touching story illustrates the power of community, compassion, and the incredible impact of standing together during tough times.
