After a heartfelt four-year journey, Maggie DeGreenia was joyfully reunited with her cherished cat, Tinsel, thanks to a fortunate discovery by her cousin on a local shelter’s website.
Tinsel went missing in December 2021, prompting a flurry of activity from Maggie, who devoted weeks to searching for her beloved pet. She tirelessly posted on Facebook groups, reached out to shelters, and put up missing posters, but ultimately had to face the painful reality that her furry friend might be gone for good.
Maggie, a 27-year-old resident of Vermont, had welcomed Tinsel into her life in 2017 after adopting her from a shelter in Lunenburg. Tragically, four years later, Tinsel slipped out of the house and disappeared without a trace.
“We spent weeks calling local shelters and searching for her on foot and by car,” Maggie shared. Eventually, she came to terms with the loss and hoped that Tinsel had found a loving new home.

Then, out of the blue, Maggie received a message from her cousin that would change everything: she spotted Tinsel on the shelter’s website, easily recognizable by her distinctive ‘moustache.’
“She texted me, ‘Hey, important, I think I found Tinsel,’” Maggie recalled. “I was in disbelief when I saw the photo and immediately broke down in tears. I called Riverside Rescue, the shelter, as fast as I could, still crying as I shared our story.”
When Tinsel and Maggie were finally reunited at the shelter, the moment was nothing short of magical. Tinsel immediately recognized her owner, nuzzling her forehead against Maggie’s in a heartwarming display of affection. “It was the most incredible feeling,” Maggie said.
The shelter revealed that Tinsel had been taken in by a kind family who cared for her until December, when she was surrendered, leading to her eventual return to Maggie.
This touching reunion showcases the enduring bond between pets and their owners, reminding us that hope and love can triumph, even after the longest of separations.
