States Lose Power to Regulate Pickup Truck Emissions as Senate, EPA Roll Back Key Standards
July 27, 2025 โ Washington, D.C.In a sweeping reversal thatโs sending shockwaves through the environmental and automotive worlds, both Congress and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have taken major steps to dismantle emissions rulesโmany of which directly impact pickup trucks. Just weeks ago, the U.S. Senate voted to revoke Californiaโs long-standing authority to enforce its own vehicle emissions standards. That authority, granted through the Clean Air Act waiver, has historically allowed California and more than a dozen other states to impose stricter regulations on cars and trucksโincluding mandates for cleaner pickup trucks and zero-emissions vehicle (ZEV) targets.
