3 Rescued Lions Welcomed to Sanctuary After Traveling By Air, Sea, and American Highways From Honduras

In a groundbreaking event for Honduras, eight magnificent big cats have been successfully relocated from the country to accredited wildlife sanctuaries in the United States for the very first time. This remarkable initiative marks a new era in wildlife conservation and care.

As part of this pioneering operation, five tigers made their way to the Carolina Tiger Rescue, while three lions found their new home at a wildlife refuge in Arkansas, where they will embark on a joyful new chapter in a permanent sanctuary.

The journey of these three lions—Cyrus, Zephora, and Juancito—was nothing short of extraordinary. They traveled across vast distances by ship, then by air, and finally through the scenic American highways, all while being closely monitored and adhering to both international and U.S. regulations.

Previously cared for by a dedicated team at Little French Key Island in the beautiful Honduran Caribbean, the lions arrived at Turpentine Creek Wildlife Sanctuary (TCWS) on January 15th. There, they were welcomed into spacious, specially designed habitats tailored to cater to their physical, behavioral, and psychological needs. The sanctuary’s commitment to providing rescued big cats with dignity, expert care, and lifelong protection shines through in these custom environments, as noted by a spokesperson for the refuge.

Scott Smith, the vice-president of TCWR and an active participant in the rescue, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “This mission embodies everything sanctuary work represents: international cooperation, compassion, and a future where rescued animals receive the lives they truly deserve. After an incredible journey, these lions are finally home.”

The success of this historic rescue is attributed to the unwavering dedication of Leo Lahijani from Little French Key Resort, who has been instrumental in advocating for a brighter future for the animals under his care. Mr. Lahijani remarked, “This rescue has been years in the making, driven by a deep sense of responsibility to ensure the best possible future for these animals. Our primary goal was to improve their outcomes by partnering with organizations that have the expertise and integrity to provide lifelong care. Collaborating with Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge and Carolina Tiger Rescue enabled us to move forward with confidence, knowing these lions and tigers would receive the care they rightfully deserve.”

The relocation process involved close cooperation with Honduran environmental authorities and international partners, including the Honduran Institute of Forest Conservation (ICF), CITES, veterinary professionals, and logistics teams who ensured the safety and well-being of the animals at every stage of their journey.

Honduran environmental officials have hailed this operation as a national milestone, setting a new standard for responsible wildlife management and reinforcing the country’s commitment to conservation and the fight against illegal wildlife trade.

For Cyrus, Zephora, and Juancito, this transition means a future filled with safety, space, and a lifetime of compassionate care. What a heartwarming story of hope and new beginnings!
