A dedicated snow plow driver found himself in the midst of a near-whiteout on Long Island when he noticed something unusual ahead of him.
Kenny McGowan has encountered various hidden challenges while plowing snow, ranging from buried vehicles to fallen branches. However, this time, he spotted two small figures dashing along the icy, snow-covered road.
“I glanced over and saw something out of the corner of my eye. Then I looked in my mirror and realized it was a dog,” McGowan recounted to CBS News. “I immediately turned on my sirens and followed closely behind them. Being an animal lover and a father, I instinctively went into protection mode. I knew I had to do whatever it took to keep these dogs safe.”
Determined to help, he maneuvered his plow sideways near Town Hall, effectively blocking the dogs’ path. Startled, the dogs ran into a median strip and burrowed themselves into three feet of snow.
With the assistance of several Good Samaritans, who were either curious about the roadblock or had seen the dogs, McGowan was able to coax the two uncollared Labrador mixes into the back of his truck.
The compassionate driver rushed them to the nearest animal shelter, where staff members expressed relief upon hearing the story. They informed CBS that the dogs could have easily frozen to death if they had remained hidden in the snow drift.
Upon arrival at the shelter, it was evident that the two dogs had a strong bond, as they stayed close together the entire time. The shelter staff decided not to separate them, recognizing their deep connection.
Though the dogs were without collars, they were microchipped. Their owners were quickly notified, and the pups were reunited, likely cozying up in a warm doggie bed that very night.
Let’s applaud Kenny for his incredible compassion in rescuing these two furry friends from the snow!
