18 Outdoor Dogs Rescued from Winter Storm–and One Gives Birth Safe and Warm Inside Shelter

In southeast Missouri, the nonprofit Animal Rescue Corps (ARC) took swift action to rescue a pregnant dog along with 17 other furry friends from the harsh conditions brought on by a winter storm that impacted much of the United States.

Now safe and cozy at their rescue facility near Nashville, the dedicated ARC staff assisted the expectant mother in welcoming a delightful litter of nine puppies into the world.

According to ARC, the rescue mission was initiated after a call from Doniphan, Missouri, where responders discovered several adult dogs chained up, as well as multiple litters of puppies wandering freely on the property.

ARC Executive Director Tim Woodward, who is also a finalist for the CNN 2025 Hero of the Year award, emphasized that this was not a criminal case. Instead, the property owners took the proactive step of seeking help as the winter storm approached.

“The individuals living on the property realized that the number of dogs had exceeded what they could manage and acknowledged they could no longer provide the necessary care for the animals,” said Woodward.

Moreover, the property owners agreed to have their personal dogs spayed or neutered at ARC’s expense to prevent further overpopulation.

On Thursday night, the ARC team headed to the area, collaborating with local rescuers on Friday morning. By the end of the day, they had successfully transported seven adult dogs and 11 puppies to their shelter in Tennessee, as reported by KFVS 12.

The situation was described as one of “uncontrolled reproduction that got out of hand,” with the property owners initially taking in just a few dogs while attempting to assist a family member.

While ARC does not focus on adoptions, they specialize in large-scale rescues of multiple animals. Once these pets have recovered mentally and physically from their previous conditions, and legal custody is secured, ARC works with their network of pre-approved 501(c)(3) nonprofit shelters and rescues to help these animals find loving homes.
